Studio Berk is the studio of Anna Berkhof.
Anna Berkhof (1987) is a Dutch artist, photographer, gardener and historian specialised in architecture, urban planning and landscape. She has worked as a senior editor, writer and curator at different art collectives and platforms: a.o. Land Art Contemporary, We Are Public, Monnik & Pink Pony Express. Anna completed her studies with a thesis on Tokyo Street Gardens: Notion and appearance of home and nature in Tokyo street gardens. A subject she still holds dear and writes and talks about in different media. After graduating she took a more hands on approach by learning how to grow and arrange flowers at a flower nursery and floral art studio. In 2018 she started Studio Berk as a first step towards doing more projects of her own and developing her photography. She believes she can bring a unique combination of skills to the table in dealing with questions of nature, landscape and belonging: both as a researcher, artist and curator.
As a photographer and artist her background in landscape history plays a big role, supplemented with personal life experiences. She takes photos of the common, the normal, the small things some others might overlook. Many of her pictures are of traces in the landscape: clues that something has happened there. Documentation of how human beings shape the space around them. In this way her work concerns itself with the border (or crash) between nature and human activity. She wants to research and show the ways we interact with the natural world: with plants, with animals, sometimes deliberately, sometimes unconsciously. For her this is a theme that has great historical significance, is very relevant today, and will stay endlessly interesting in the future.
Currently Anna works in her flower garden VITA, is filming a movie with Carlos Mora Fuentes and is busy developing projects of her own.
